jijue hali yako! The G-PANGE is derivative of the Swahili word "Jipange" which can be translated to mean "sorting yourself out" or "watch out". This was developed in conjunction with the youth after extensive surveys among target groups on what word best represents the call to "sorting ourselves" out as youth.

There is growing concern about the choices young people are making as they go about their daily lives. The youth are influenced by their peers, music, career prospects, relationships, technology and the need to be recognised in their social groups. A number of these factors could influence the decisions they make, which may lead them to success or failure.

Generation Jipange which was the awareness phase gave way to G-PANGE on December 6 th 2008. G-PANGE now personifies the platform on which youth are being engaged through a number of G-PANGE philosophies targeting them.

The G-PANGE initiative aims at giving the youth opportunity to choose a philosophy that encompasses all aspects of youth life with specific emphasis on skills development, social networking, career opportunities, excellence in sports, the arts and above all leading a healthy lifestyle.

The focus here will be to send a message to youth about making the right choices in life and avoiding risky behaviour that could jeopardise their chances at a better life.

G-PANGE assumed a "cool" and rather "hip" way that young people identify with, to relay the message.

The G-pange initiative is being supported by the Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (PHFG) and a host of corporate partners who are putting in their core competencies in helping communicate and provide skills for healthy living to the youth.? It has emerged that the youth habitually shut out direct HIV messages which appear to "talk at" them as opposed to creating a common platform with youth that lead them to open up to and assimilate messages that impact on their lives.

The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation is a new global public-private partnership championed by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

Kenya has been chosen as a pilot to launch this initiative in Africa before it is replicated in other countries. In Kenya PEPFAR will invest over USD 10million a year in this youth initiative and will continue to be supported by other global and local foundations and organizations.

The Partnership for an HIV-Free generation currently includes 19 international private sector partners that include. Accenture, The Africa Broadcast Media Partnership against HIV, APCO Worldwide, Girl Scouts, The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, Grassroot Soccer, Hasbro, Intel, Junior Achievement, AmericaShare, Microsoft, MTV Staying Alive, Rotarians for Fighting AIDS, Technoserve, The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, The Draper Richards Foundation,? The Nike Foundation and Warner Bros. Advanced Media Services Inc.? Plans are underway to grow membership to include local Kenyan and regional private sector corporations committed in the fight against HIV by targeting youth.
